Brothers Make Machine Control Work on Precise Cemetery Jobs
Redlands, California-based Buenas Brothers Engineering, owned by Javier, Emilio, Eli and Steven Buenas, is one of 12 finalists for Equipment World’s 2024 Contractor of the Year Award.
In the video above, Javier and Eli Buenas talk about how their father, Emilio, established the foundation for the company’s stellar reputation in installing cemetery crypts and mausoleums.
With Emilio now concentrating on lending his expertise in operating equipment, brothers Javier, Eli and Steven have taken a leadership role in the company. And with the change in generations has come an emphasis on using machine control technology.
Buenas Brothers’ work requires precise layout and installation of side-by-side double-depth concrete lawn crypts, placed less than 2 inches from each other and conforming to undulating grade elevations. Exactness is required to not encroach on future crypt installations, an important revenue source for cemeteries.
“Once you have the model in the equipment, it’s just smooth sailing from there,” Javier says.
“It’s made it so much easier,” adds Eli. “We don’t have to rely on someone as the spot grade-checker or spotter. As an operator, I love it.”
“We’ve been in this work forever, and everyone knows us,” Javier says. “So we’ve been fortunate enough to stay here and just make a name for ourselves in this particular industry.”

The result, he says, is a “pretty stinking fun machine to ride on.” So how does it stack u...
New Helmet Design Brings Hard Hat into the 21st Century

The typical hard hat worn by construction workers hasn’t had a design change in over 100 years, and it only protects the top of the head - if it stays on. In contrast, sports head gear has undergone major innovations to provide better insulation and protect wearers from falls and being struck. Our guest on this episode of The Dirt shows that the same technology from the sports world is now avai...

There are so many onvious problems with that yanmar that its too long to list. I work in a CTL every day and would never ever come close to thinking of buying a yanmar. Love their excavators, theyre top notch. This CTL looks like absolute garbage in nearly every way possible. Just another brittle forestry machine on par with ASV and definitely not a piece of construction equipment.

All i see in this video is a bunch of gum flapping and jaw jacking about nonsense that does not adress my issues or answer my questions. I am not sold on putting this in my older equipment just because you say its ok to with nothing to back that statement up! My older equipment is extremely important to me. Even more so than a large company or corporation. That equipment is my family's life line to having food on the table and a roof over thier head. Ultimately I think I will probably just find another brand that carries oils I know i can trust not to put my equipment at risk because of changes to benefit big corporate bank accounts! Also whats up with the stuipid 1.5 gallon 2 pack carboard box packaging at Walmart? Who's nonsense bull chit idea was that?

Only reason I would consider getting anything battery powered from Milwaukee is to avoid having to pay for a mechanic to be constantly maintenance Ing the machinery and equipment because it gets expensive to keep him on payroll and it seems that these particular products to break down all the time. I don’t know how many times I sat there yanking on the starter cord over and over again like an idiot on the plate packer on the demo, saw on the rammer. battery power just seems so much easier and Maintenance free

What we don't realize is electrification is already happening on a frightening scale. My brother-in-law recently got 4 EV trucks from GM, and they fit perfectly in his lawncare and gardening business. Sure, the trucks were expensive at about $85k each, but they save him about $350-400 in gas costs each day, and replaced by electric bill of about $50. Even on the low side, that is still an impressive $300/day across four trucks. These trucks tow about 10,000 lbs, enough to tow a trailer with all the equipment, and can go about 200 or so miles. So, the radius of operation of 100 miles isn't small either. With the savings in fuel costs of the ONLY the truck, that works out around $7000/month, which is only $1,000 less than the monthly payments. The MAJOR advantage is, that these trucks can be charged in about 8-9 hours from the depot, at commercial electricity rates. This strategy is actually working out extremely well, he is able to now quote significantly lower and also afford to pay employees better, meaning he has his choice of employees. So much so, that he has put down a $20k deposit for another 3 trucks. Just this weekend, we were discussing putting up solar on the sheds in the depot and also trying to make a few cost estimates of turning some of the actual equipment (mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, riding mowers etc.) electric. Some reviews weren't that great for some brands, some were amazing! Do these electric equipment have downsides? Absolutely! They cannot last as long as the gas powered machines and they cost more. By our estimates, these electric machines only need about 12 months to reach a breakeven point versus the gas machines and that includes additional batteries, enough to last on four jobs in a 12-13 hour shift. Near zero maintenance for the powertrain (The maintenance on gas machines - the engine is insane, you need it nearly every other week, but the electric and gas require near equal non-powertrain maintenance) is a huge boon! We might take the plunge, replacing the gas machines as they age out and become too expensive to keep in running conditions, or even wait a couple years for arrival of better electric equivalents. Not to mention the additional fuel savings.

Pathetic! How are you supposed to ride it to work if it shuts off? Some old school nutters used to ride the diesel powered compactors / whomper stompers around like pogo sticks. This looks boring, and it's battery powered, so it will die before the job is finished and it will cost a fortune to replace the battery, assuming they still produce it when you come to replace it. 😅

I operated the 963 on the island of oahu for r.h.s.
